    Understanding the Periodic Table

    The periodic table organizes elements by their atomic structure. Master these core ideas and most exam questions become straightforward.

    Groups (1–18)

    Vertical columns. Elements in the same group share similar chemical behaviour because they have the same number of valence electrons.

    Periods (1–7)

    Horizontal rows. Each new period adds an electron shell, so atomic radius generally increases down a group.

    Blocks (s, p, d, f)

    Tell you which subshell is being filled. The s and p blocks form the main groups; d is transition metals; f is the rare earths.

    Periodic Trends

    Atomic radius decreases across a period. Ionization energy and electronegativity increase across a period and decrease down a group.
